The paper argues that nursing care for the elder population is an obligation of a caring society and it is also a right to which older persons are entitled. The paper relates that legislation and organizations are working to make this care both appropriate and accessible, however, nurses must step up themselves and change the perception that elder care requires only the attention of unskilled health care workers and that it is somehow "beneath" them. The paper asserts that the care of older patients is a skilled and complex process that must be available to all older members of the population.

The implications associated with such study are numerous, including implications made from a socio-political perspective. It is, in fact, difficult to separate gerontology from socio-political issues, given that the elderly often seem to be lost in the flurry of programs for people of colour, for people in poverty, for battered spouses, and so on.
