Description:
The paper presents the position that if we proceed with intelligent and scientific caution with genetic engineering, the potential for results and overall improvement for the world condition is spectacular. The paper dispels the fears associated with genetic engineering and argues that it will help mankind thrive through the dilemma of overpopulation and manage to keep starving children alive.
From the Paper:
"The Midwest Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (MSAWG) simply says that, "biotechnology is comprised of a set of techniques that involve the manipulation of living organisms for human use" (MSAWG). Genetic engineering, a subgroup within biotechnology, is the actual process of manipulation: "Genetic engineering, also referred to as recombinant DNA and gene splicing, is one of the more common and controversial types of biotechnology being introduced into agriculture. Genetic engineering is a set of new technologies that artificially transfers genes in order to move particular traits from one organism to another. These techniques create organisms with new combinations of traits not possible in nature" (MSAWG, Position Paper). Genetic engineering can occur across a wide spectrum of human effort. The areas most under discussion include agriculture, health and medicine. About the latter, Nobel Laureate David Baltimore of Rockefeller University says, "Every disease we know about is either being attacked with genetics or is being illuminated through genetics " (Maugh, A-1)."Cite this Persuasive Essay:
