"New Orleans has been besieged by high rates of crime, especially in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The hurricane exacerbated the tension between those who have and those who have not; those who live in dire straits and those who had the luxury to rebuild their homes. Crime in New Orleans is a direct reflection of income disparity and the frustration that comes from class conflict. Race is also linked to the perception and presence of crime in the city. With race and income levels connected, it seems that people of color are bearing the biggest burden of our nation's problems. The cause of crime in New Orleans is related to a lack of access to social and cultural capital. Without the means by which to achieve upwards social mobility, many members of the city are turning to illegitimate acts such as robbery and theft to acquire money. Issues like jealousy, revenge, greed, and anger are also key causes in the crime problem that has taken over New Orleans. Drugs and alcohol are not helping either; under the influence, people who are poor and desperate are more likely to commit crimes and are also more likely to commit more serious crimes. The solution to the problem lies in effective public policy. Instead of beefing up the police force, the city needs to reconsider ways of empowering the poor."
