The paper explores the controversy over a terminally ill patient's desire to die with dignity instead of waiting to suffer a lengthy and slow process. The paper discusses the Oregon Act that allows terminally ill patients to choose suicide, and presents the viewpoint of this author that is in full support of the Act. The paper contends that in a nation that allows death by force in the case of criminals and abortion, there is no reason to refuse an adult who has no hope of recovery to choose to end his life with dignity.
From the Paper:"For the last few years the nation watched as a man named Dr. Jack Kavorkian made international news helping patients kill themselves. He insisted it was their right to die with dignity while prosecutors insisted it was murder. The nation watched in alternating horror and fascination until Kavorkian made the mistake of allowing a television show to tape an assisted death. He added a new element this time however, and he himself plunged the lethal drug into the patient which resulted in a murder charge and a conviction for manslaughter in which he went to prison. While the controversy swirled around one man and his desire to assist dying patients states began the process of legislating laws to allow or prevent people in their states from attempting the same action."
