Description:

This writer discusses the suicides of Phoebe Prince and Sladjana Vidovic who were bullied beyond endurance and then describes his personal experiences of being bullied in his high school years. The writer shows how standing up against bullies can be scary, but he would still advise it, but he does not advise victims of bullying to make friends with the bullies. The writer concludes that it may seem very sad that teaching children to fight has become necessary as a means of survival, but the world of adolescence can be a very brutal place and you must be able to stand up to those who want to hurt you.

From the Paper:

"Bullying can be a hard thing to take for any child, especially for kids who don't have the kind of self-esteem needed to repulse it. I myself, though I had plenty of pride and took great insult at bullying, lacked the self-esteem and confidence to stand up to--at least initially. Raised in a religious environment, I was taught that vengeance was the Lord's, and that one should forgive those who have wronged you. Such is easy to say--but looking back, and having developed a better understanding of religion, I would say that even Christ stood up to bullies--and they backed down more often than He did. And so I would counsel anyone who came to me now for advice: best stand up for yourself, even if it costs you (and it cost Christ His life). It's a harsh thing to counsel, but as I will show--it does work.
"The experience upon which my advice is based comes from my high school years, when I was still a small kid. In Spanish class, a taller boy behind me would often try to aggravate me for his own amusement by jolting my desk or marking on the back of my neck with his pen. I did not know how to stop these disruptions as I thought drawing attention to them would cause me embarrassment when the whole class took notice."
