The paper discusses how teachers need to study and reexamine traditional literature and begin selecting a variety in the literary works that will reflect the various cultures and values of all ethnic and culture groups. From the Paper:

"By the year 2020, one of every two students in the United States will be a person of color (Dietrich and Ralph 1995). It is necessary for educators to offer a variety of literature in the English classroom in the today's society. Educators should encourage students of all ethnics and cultures to develop their knowledge to the fullest extent. Educators should help students to learn and explore their own cultures and when available study various authors of their culture. At one time there was little information or authors of the African-American literature, but this is rapidly changing in today's society.
"The English classroom cannot exist on white American English. Before students would be limited by the sources available in the English classroom. Now there are a variety of types of literature to pick and choose from. All students should be encouraged to read the available literature. By reading and studying African-American literature, all can grasp the meaning of "equality for all". It used to be that English existed around the American and European classical literature. This has vastly changed and there are various sources to find current literature and several pieces of African-American literature. However, African-American students should be encouraged to read about their culture and recognize the importance of standing up for their beliefs in today's world."
