Description:

This paper reviews Amy Tan's short story, "Two Kinds," with the paper's author reflecting and relating to the experiences of the story's protagonist. First, the paper describes how the story's main character, Jing-Mei, resented piano lessons. The reviewer understands this, and describes a similar experience of hating dance lessons as a child. The reviewer also explores being a victim of parental pressure, similar to Jing-Mei. The paper also describes how the reviewer felt about the story "Two Kinds" after reading it at different stages of life, once as a young adult and then several years later. The paper concludes with some of the reviewer's thoughts on parenting and building good relationships with one's children.

From the Paper:

"Things would not have been so bad had the pressure stayed within the realm of dancing but it seemed to spread to other areas of my life that might affect my dancing. I could not go to the movies and eat popcorn and junk food without being questioned about what I ate when I got home. My parents watched what I ate when I was around them and if they even thought I might be gaining weight, they felt compelled to have a talk with me about the significance of dancing and health. When I read the story, I thought about how out of control the parents in my life seemed and Jing-Mei's mother seemed like she was obsessing over Jing-Mei's playing in the same way."
