The writer describes the suffering endured by his ill mother and the difficult decision of whether to remove her from the life support machine. The writer relates that he wanted to let her go because he could not bear her suffering, however, since the majority of his family was against turning off the life support system, he went against his personal beliefs and agreed with them. The writer then reveals that when he could no longer endure the sight of her suffering, he followed his beliefs and told the hospital to stop the machine.

From the Paper:

"As a person grows older, he gets wiser and establishes his identity by having personal beliefs and building relationships apart from within the family sphere. The person's individual beliefs are what makes him that person, what identifies him and often what differs him from others. To some, personal beliefs are a strong conviction of how one will live and lead his life - and often will fight to the death in keeping those beliefs. Thus, most individuals will not dare revolt against his their personal beliefs. Unfortunately though, there are instances in life that we are sometimes pressured into doing things that are against our beliefs. Some of the reasons may be because of peer pressure, social stigma, job requirements, or being compelled by family and friends. Personally, there have been times when I have been pressured into doing things that I certainly did not believe in. To say the least, these things were really against my beliefs but I ended up doing because I did not want to get into trouble or as a result of wanting to help someone in dire need. Despite the reasons for doing things against my personal beliefs, I never felt any better thereafter and the guilty feeling remained deep in my person and conscience."
