"Five years ago, I was trapped in a horrible, abusive marriage with a man who was seriously mentally ill and unwilling to do much of anything to improve his prognosis or behavior. I was living in a very stressful environment and unable to walk away due to illness, fear, and financial concerns. Despite all of this chaos, I was in school and working full-time. I had determined a two-fold purpose in life. I was going to write several books that would help to change people's lives by telling stories from my own life, and I was going to work with inmates and advocate for prison reform, either as a social worker or a defense attorney. In the meantime, I was simply biding my time until I could get out of the marriage and say goodbye to all of the undue stress, abuse, and negligence in my life."Ironically, prior to meeting my ex-husband, I had worked in a couple of mental health facilities where more than 80 percent of the residents were Schizophrenic, just like him. I had specialized training to recognize and work with people suffering from this mental illness. I met my ex outside of work, and once we were married, I excused his behavior and felt that, perhaps, my whole purpose in life and the justification for my training, education, and experience was so that I could help him and handle this difficult long-term challenge. In many ways, I still see this as true, but I feel it was not a lifelong purpose, and I served in this capacity for as long as was necessary, even if he did not actually embrace the strategies recommended for improving his own life. We had been together for five years by the time I redetermined my purpose, and five years later, I feel my purpose in life has definitely re-evolved."
