Wide Area Networks or WANs are meant to allow the facilitation of communication between parties at two or more places. This is in contrast to Local Area Networks (LAN) that allow communication between parties within a single location. The paper explains that these places are referred to as nodes and the communication occurs at the lowest possible prices, while reliability is high. The nodes can occur anywhere on the globe, whether they be in a single building, across the continent or indeed on different continents. Thus an organization can network with all its offices across the globe in a single system. The paper shows that communications between departments of a global company are thus considerably simplified. This paper examines WAN architecture, concepts connected to this networking system and and services it offers to its users.
From the Paper:"During the 1990's, the standard architecture for most large networks was the three-tiered WAN with ATM or FDDI able to link various data centers and other sites (Johnson 2002). Branch and field offices were linked by means of frame relay, and direct-dial remote access together with ISDN enabled communication between remote and home offices. According to Johnson (2002) a new architecture has been implemented in order to match the new efficiency levels required in the 21st century. The Gigabit Ethernet is thus replacing ATM as a link between large data centers."
