America is changing - socially, demographically, and politically. As it changes, new issues push their way to the fore and old issues recede into the background. Certainly, one of the issues that has become very important in the last few years has been same-sex unions and whether or not it is good for the country; in particular, there have been fears expressed that giving legal sanction to same-sex marriage in all of the US states will further weaken the battered institution of (heterosexual) marriage. The following proposal is interested in this social debate, but especially interested in learning about how the increased controversy surrounding same-sex unions has impacted same-sex couples that happen to be African-American. To elaborate, what economic challenges do same-sex couples in America face because of the present debate? Understanding the situation confronting this marginalized minority group will allow us to find ways of assisting such couples find a secure haven in a turbulent world.
