From the Paper:"Tutoring can involve group instruction, but it most often describes the one-on-one process in which a teacher shares either particular knowledge or skills in helping the student to keep up with or progress ahead of classroom learning. Lynda B. Myers (1990) contends that the process goes beyond specific learning: "What tutors do best is inspire . . . students to succeed" (p. i). Marilyn Jones (1984) agrees: "Teachers teach children, not subjects" (p. 20). She argues, "What you are really attempting to do in these sessions is to effect a change in the child's learning patterns" (p. 21). Specific content is certainly important, but effective tutoring goes beyond communicating facts and figures or helping a student learn to read. Effective tutoring addresses the whole student being tutored, seeking to make a specific difference in the student's life."
