Timothy O'Sullivan's Harvest of Death (1863) Timothy O'Sullivan's photograph entitled Harvest of Death was taken after the battle of Gettysburg during the United States Civil War in 1863. O'Sullivan was one of several photographers who were employed to document the Civil War in this new medium of photography, which had been invented only twenty-four years earlier, in 1839. Previously a photographic assistant in New York City, O'Sullivan became part of Matthew Brady's "Photographic Corps," a group of traveling photographers that moved around the United States taking photographs of the battles and lifestyle of soldiers in the Civil War starting in 1861 (Rosenblum).
