"The World Bank is variously described as predator or prey, puppet or puppet master, depending on who is doing the describing. Many developing countries anxious for its aid might say it is a benevolent donor, whereas many others might describe it as a harsh task master. Yet, no one would argue that the World Bank has had an indelible influence on the global economy and that its mandate has grown considerably since its inception. However, given the direction of the world's economy and the growing divide between developed and under-developed countries, there is a growing call to reexamine the bank's mission within the new millennium's fully integrated and networked economy.
