From the Paper:

"In addition to voice, data is transmitted by means of telecommunications, from simple facsimiles to on-line computer messages, to massive information downloads of medical, financial or scientific data. The telecommunications industry is divided into local and long-distance telephone service providers, competitive access providers (CAPs), wireless communications services, cable television operators, and value-added services including a variety of specialized offerings that can be accessed over the regular telephone network or via special carrier networks [James, 2001].
"Although there is no industry agreement on definitions for value-added network services, several service categories are generally recognized. Traditional value-added network services include packet transmission and protocol conversion. Newer information services include on-line databases and electronic yellow pages. There are messaging and conferencing services such as voice messaging, electronic mail, specialized fax services, audioconferencing, and specialized data services such as frame relay, new services being introduced over ISDN, and transaction processing services such as electronic data interchange (EDI). All of these methods of electronic communication can be carried over several lines, including telephone, cable, and wireless [James, 2001]."
