Description:

The following paper will look at the social issues which gripped - and which contine to grip - Lithuania in the aftermath of the Soviet Union's collapse. Specifically, the paper will look at the ethnic divisions within the country, the political situation in that land, and the recent (and current) economic circumstances of Lithuania. No less significantly, the paper will explore the current national self-image of Lithuania and who was responsible (and why) for the production of this national imagery. Last of all, the paper will conclude by examining terrorism within the Lithuanian context, the state's migratory flows, and what can be expected from Lithuania in the future. In the end, while far from idyllic, Lithuania is doing some important things better than other Baltic States and, because of that, may be able to achieve the sort of lasting stability and internal peace that has proved so elusive in the past to so many Eastern European countries.
