"Physical activity, whether organized or unstructured plays a critical role in the development process of children. In the modern context, parents are likely to have conflicting feelings on whether to expose their children to sporting activities supervised by adults. Other parents find it difficult to allow their children to participate in free play where there is little or no supervision. Children usually have different preferences about the form of sporting activities they engage in. Fitzgerald, Bunde-Birouste and Webster (2009) conducted a qualitative research to explore physical activities, drinking and eating experiences of pupils. The study indicated that infant participants preferred free play while primary school participants preferred structured and semi-structured activities (Fitzgerald, Bunde-Birouste and Webster, 2009).Several factors influence the participation level and growth curves of children in both structured and unstructured settings. For instance, the study conducted by Denault and Poulin(2009) demonstrated that variations in individual, family and friend factors influenced the participation growth curves of individuals.
"Any sporting activity, whether supervised has its merits and demerits and, therefore, each choice of sporting activities has its impacts on the player. It is vital for parents, guardians, coaches, supervisors, pediatrics and other involved parties to understand the pros and cons of each type of physical activity. Taking this approach is essential because it ensures that children participate in the most beneficial activities and do away with unhelpful activities. Another crucial consideration in choosing the type of sporting activity is the developmental value of the activity to children. Both forms of activities contribute significantly to the development of the physical, social, cognitive and emotional domains of children.Other contributions of play include adaptive behavior development, communication skill development, creative development, language development, and literacy development."
