Description:

This paper proposes a community education program that will instruct pre-school children, aged 5 - 6, on the steps necessary to maintain proper oral hygiene. According to this paper, oral hygiene is the first step towards maintenance of their overall health. This paper also discusses how developmental issues, community issues and health issues are all interwoven.

From the Paper:

"It is important to learn proper oral hygiene techniques as early as possible. Leal, Bezerra and Toledo (2002) tell us that "Tooth brushing, as all habits of hygiene, is acquired during the socialization process of the child. When this habit is taught in early childhood, it is naturally ingrained in the daily routine of the child." Johnson (2001) tells us that, developmentally, children 5 and 6 years of age are social-emotional learners; that they respond more readily to social-emotional factors than they do reading or math skills which create stress in the child at that age. "
