"In 1965, 17-year old Fred DeLuca borrowed one thousand dollars from his friend Peter Buck and began making submarine sandwiches in Milford, Connecticut. In 1974, DeLuca and Buck began offering franchises under the Subway name. Their goal is to have 8,000 stores open in 1995. The company added 1,000 stores in 1991, and company-wide sales increased from 360 million dollars in 1987 to 1.4 billion dollars in 1991.. At the end of 1991, there were 6,187 stores opened worldwide, including in Canada and Japan..
