The Palestinian-Israeli conflict effectively dates from the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. The conflict, which at times has approached the tempo of civil war, is between those Palestinians who wish for a meaningful sovereign state within the post-1967 borders of Israel and the Israeli state, which does not want to cede full sovereignty to any entity within its borders. In this conflict the Palestinians have employed guerrilla tactics-including kidnapping, hijacking, and, lately, suicide bombing-while the Israelis have utilized targeted assassinations, collective punishment, and, occasionally, modern militarized warfare against pockets of Palestinian resistance.
