It is difficult to address the issue of whether some roles can be deemed more important than others in the future. The evolution and perception of not only the nurse's role, but their identities as a professional group still continue to become refined and re-defined as needs in the health care system arise. Collaboration and leadership evidently transcend nurse-patient dyads as they involve intra-professional as well as inter-professional relations that, by convention, follow a hierarchy that has been in place for more than a century but is put aside during life-or-death situations where smooth functioning as a unit, however transient, matter more. Leadership also has many roles, which not only involves independent professional recognition, but also relational roles as a teacher, mentor and coach (Benner, Hooper-Kyriakidis & Stannard, 1999). From the ill-perceived role of the nurse performing mundane tasks for physicians more than half a century ago, the establishment of nursing as a distinct pillar in the health care system to the hybridization of the practice of both nursing and medicine as a nurse practitioner to address primary care physician shortages, it is still to be determined what non-clinical roles may arise in the future health care system.
