20724 PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION Educational philosophers Herbert Croly (1869-1930) and John Dewey (1859-1952) lived and worked in both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Dewey, in fact, lived to see World War Two and the early years of the Cold War. They were born during an era celebrated, not entirely accurately, as that of rugged individualism. Every man, so the idea went, was capable, by his own efforts, of reaching the full level of his capacity. ("Man" and "his" are not used just for convenience. Women were only gradually gaining rights during this period.)
