From the Paper:"In 1954 a 52 year old milkshake maker salesman named Ray Kroc heard about a hamburger stand in San Bernardino, California, owned by brothers Dick and Mac Mcdonald. Kroc traveled to the restaurant and was highly impressed with the speed of service. Based on what he saw, he convinced Dick and Mac Mcdonald that they should expand and create a chain of similar stores. Kroc volunteered to open the stores and the McDonald brothers agreed. The first McDonald's franchise store was opened in Des Plaines Illinois in 1955. The restaurants were a quick success with 100 restaurants opening across the United States in just 4 years. In another 4 years, 500 McDonald's restaurants existed across the United States. In 1966 the company was listed on the stock exchange, where its shares have continued to grow. In 1967 McDonald's began its international expansion by opening stores in Canada and Peurto Rico. Expansion continued with over 15,000 restaurants opened by 1995, including restaurants in over 100 countries. This history, covering a period of less than fifty years, represents one of America's greatest business successes."
