The role of maternal scaffolding in early childhood has been widely researched. For example, maternal scaffolding has been found to facilitate language development. This essay reviews two studies that have examined other potential benefits of maternal scaffolding. Bigelow, Maclean, and Proctor (2004) examined the role that maternal scaffolding can play in facilitating the development of play activities. They found that maternal scaffolding, especially when carried out by mothers sensitive to the child's needs and direction, accelerated development of play.
