This paper will discuss the leadership of Marshal Henri-Philippe Petain in Vichy France during the Second World War. The first part of the paper will briefly look at the development of Petain's reputation among the French people during the First World War. The second part of the paper will examine how Petain was selected to lead the French government in the wake of the military defeat by the Germans in 1940. The third part of the paper will discuss the Vichy government and its effect on France during the war.
