Thirteen states have passed medical marijuana laws, allowing for various degrees of access to marijuana for patients. This paper takes a pro-con looks at those states and the overall issue.

Legalization of Marijuana for Medical Purposes Marijuana, scientifically known as Cannabis Sativa, is a plant that has been cultivated and ingested for literally thousands of years. It is part of a human tradition, found in all societies and regions, where some type of hallucenegic substance (usually a plant) is consumed for specific religious or cultural reasons. Today, in the United States, possession, use and cultivation of any part of the plant, from the seeds to the flower, is a criminal act, punishable under various state and federal statutes. As of 2006, at least one out of every 8 federal prisoners is incarcerated for marijuana-related offenses.Cite this Essay:
