"This paper will discuss the life, career and accomplishments of Gustavus Adolphus, better known as Gustav II, King of Sweden (1611-1632). Born in 1594, Gustavus Adolphus was the son of Karl IX, who served as King of Sweden from 1604 to 1611. Gustavus Adolphus was part of a hereditary line which can be traced back to Gustavus Vasa (Gustav I), the great Swedish leader who ruled from 1523 to 1560. Gustav I had risen to power while rebelling against the Danish King Christian II, who had conquered Sweden in the early 1520s. In retaking Sweden from Denmark, Gustav I strengthened Swedish nationalism and at the same time introduced the relatively new religion of Protestantism to the country. After his death in 1560, however, Gustavus Vasa's various reforms quickly started falling apart. His son, Erik XIV, was not able to maintain unity among his advisers, and in 1568 he was deposed..."
