Nursing and its treatment of the individual is being challenged in today's world because of the environment. Most nursing does not take into consideration the social, political and environmental impact our world has on our health and for decades nursing has been centered on treating the individual and their immediate environment. In today's global climate where air travel affects diseases, catastrophes occur climate is affected, and foods consumed could be from an altogether different country using harmful pesticides. The nursing profession has discovered enough paradigms to reexamine their profession and their body of knowledge (Kleffel, 1996, p. 1-10).
