"Company Background/Mission
Dayton Hudson Corporation operates department stores and discount stores and is a publicly held corporation. Founded originally in 1902, the company has grown through strategic acquisition. The company owns and operates some of the nation’s best known retailers, specializing in stores and operations that cater to large segments of the population, and which emphasize softgoods. Dayton Hudson has refrained from entering the boutique retail market, and targets “middle America” for most of its business.


Today, Dayton Hudson operates Target, an upscale discount store offering low prices on a broad assortment of mid-range fashion and basic hardgoods, with 554 department stores in 32 states at the end of 1993. Mervyn’s is a moderately priced department store..."
