" IntroductionThe purpose of this paper is to examine the literature on teaching computer programming to high school students. In particular, the focus of the paper is on determining the value of teaching programming. With respect to the literature, it can be noted that the research on computer programming falls into two broad categories: (1) research aimed at determining the effects of learning computer programming; and (2) research on variables that modify or influence the effects (e.g., degree of benefits) obtained from learning computer programming. Both of these bodies of research are reviewed here.
