"The term `Baroque' refers to a type of music whose historical period lasted from around 1600 to 1750, and the latter part of this period, from about 1700 to 1750, came to be referred to as `high baroque.' It can be said that baroque music closed the year its most notable composer, Johann Sebastian Bach, died, as his death occurred in 1750. While the term `baroque' itself was originally meant as a derogatory word to describe the period, it has come to signify an important movement in musical history. The general characteristics of the style involve the use of ornamentation and contrasting elements to express the emotion and movement of the pieces of music.
