This essay will examine the concept of atman and anatman in the teaching of the Buddha. The concept of atman (or `self', `ego') is of particular interest because it appears as a central concept in both Hinduism and Brahmanism, and it is not surprising that the Buddhism was under the influence of the older traditions.
