The African-American community as a whole is affected by various social problems, including higher rates of unemployment, drug abuse, homelessness, and rates of incarceration. Much of this has been created over time by historical forces extending back to the time of slavery, and certainly this community has been treated differently in the American social structure and has only partially changed that treatment since the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement in earnest in the 1950s. The community thus continues to labor under many of the same handicaps that were put upon this population during a time of higher discrimination continue to take their toll.
