This paper presents a biography of the life and career of American author Tom Clancy. The paper includes an overview of Clancy's books and screenplays and reflects how his stories contain elements of the American dream, a dream that Clancy himself lived in many ways.

From the Paper:

"He continued to work hard as an insurance broker until he finished his first novel, The Hunt for Red October, about the defection of a Russian submarine crew. The book made the New York Times best seller list, after President Ronald Reagan openly praised it. During the time Clancy worked on this book the United States underwent many changes. Mikhail Gorbachev took control of the Soviet Union, adding more tension between the two superpowers of the decade. President Ronald Reagan called this region the "evil empire"; making the timeframe an era ripe for stories about freedom, espionage and intrigue.
"Many of Clancy's novels involve around the character named Jack Ryan. Ryan, a fascinating character and the main protagonist in several novels. Ryan personifies the simple ideals of the American dream, "It included a wife he loved and two children he doted on, a job that tested his intellect and sufficient financial independence to choose his own path" (Clancy 37). Jack Ryan's makeup reflects Clancy's own. In Martin Greenberg's book, The Tom Clancy Companion, Tom admits Jack Ryan reflects his own personality, "You put a lot of yourself in all your characters. Jack Ryan has more of me than most" (66) Ryan's personality shows a complex character who embodies the American dream; a family man, with a highly successful career fighting for all Americans to live in a country that pursues the lofty goals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
