Description:

The paper describes William Kentridge as an internationally renowned and multitalented South African artist whose body of work includes charcoal drawings, evocative prints, animated films and theater work. The paper discusses how Kentridge's work centered on the complexity wrought from centuries of apartheid and notes that his life and cultural experiences shaped his art. The paper relates that he offered his audience a window into one of the most famous legally segregated country in the world and helped us visualize the suffering of others so that we might take that first step towards change.

From the Paper:

"What any interested party can discover, however, is that much has been written about his art and his legacy may just be that he has mastered a number of art forms and has left much for others to marvel and contemplate. His body of work includes charcoal drawings, evocative prints, animated films and theater work the subject of which most often was the complexity wrought from centuries of apartheid.
"When looking back over the course of his life one could say he lived and breathed art. For fifteen years between the years of 1975 - 1991 Kentridge directed and acted in a local theater company. At the same time during the 1980s he worked as an art director on different television movies and series.
"In 1979 Kentridge created a series of monotypes - nearly 30 in all - that were later dubbed the "Pit" series. He followed this in 1980 with a second series of 50 small etchings that were titled "Domestic Scenes" - and a self portrait of the artist on a soft done on soft cream wove paper using a mixed-media etching."
