According to the paper, this was a group made up of out-patients, basically all ages and ethnic diversity, offering their stories and some reasons why and how they began abuse. "I recently received permission to observe a substance abuse treatment group session at a nearby medical facility. There are two tiers of groups- one for in-patients, and the second level, where I was observing, for out-patients who may still be on medication and who are basically required to attend for follow-up sessions. Substance abuse treatment groups are meant to provide some help and counseling as well as interaction to those who are determined to stop using alcohol and opiate drugs as well as to those who have been forced (by court order) to attend such groups.
