""In the late 1700's, Captain Vancouver wrote in his diary about sailing into Howe Sound and his first contacts with the local tribe, the Sqohomish. Squamish is an Indian word meaning "mother of the wind" or "strong wind". This describes the winds that funnel from Howe Sound keeping the temperature in the area moderate (townsearch 1). As early as 1888 there were hop farming and crops that were shipped to England."
