"In a multicultural contemporary international system, the notion of diversity in social and organizational context is highly valued. The characterization of diversity varies from one individual to another, as well as from one organization to another. In most cases, diversity primarily centers on issues of racial backgrounds, sexual categories, religious affiliation or disability status. Diversity, generally allows people and organizations to recognize individual differences and different values. In some occurrences, the thought of diversity extends to sexual orientation or socioeconomic ranks. Establishing a system that understands diversity is essential in order to foster an environment that enhances cooperation and effectiveness at any level.
"What is diversity?
According to Oyler & Pryor, diversity represents a multitude of individual variations and comparisons that exist in a population. Diversity can include various individual characteristics such as race, age, ethnicity and sexual preferences (Oyler & Pryor, 2009). Diversity can be described using an onion whereby, every layer uncovered consequently discloses the core. The various layers of diversity include executive proportions, exterior proportions, internal dimensions, as well as personality. The organizational stratum of diversity signifies and consists of various characteristics such as administration ranks, and seniority at the work place, employment roles assigned and divisional sectors (Oyler & Pryor, 2009). In essence, individuals rarely have any control on this level as the control lies solely with a person's organizational structure.
"The exterior proportions include the features that deal with a person's life preference. Here, a person has greater control over the features available in contrast to the organizational stratum. Features in this layer include personal preferences, spiritual orientations, educational settings, external appearance, marital status, personal expenditure and geographical settings. In the internal aspect, individuals have the least amount of control (Oyler & Pryor, 2009)."
