Description:

The paper relates that Kathleen S., a social worker at a local regional county hospital, has worked to accumulate resource and referral information for indigent services as well as arrange the paying of power bills and rent for needy patients. The paper notes the need for a single entity which has knowledge of all the possibilities available for problems associated with aging, limited income and limited support systems, especially to those who are mostly homebound. The paper then describes KS' vision of a local program that would be a referral source for a community based social work driven agency, that would allow her a community based referral system so that increased follow up care could be provided and possibly a volunteer could do home visits to help seniors better meet their needs.

From the Paper:

"Kathleen S. has been a Social Worker at a local regional county hospital in a rural community for ten years. Though the other hospital in the area has the same legal policies regarding the treatment of patients regardless of their ability to pay the hospital that Kathleen S. works at has a reputation for more frequently treating people with limited means and limited or no insurance coverage because of their historical connection to County based funding and support. The hospital is no longer funded by tax dollars but is now owned by a not for profit ecumenical faith based company with its headquarters several hundred miles away.
"Though Kathleen S. as a social worker is primarily responsible for advocating for patients, with regard to getting their present and future health care needs met, she is often faced with individuals in abject or pending abject poverty. In this role KS has spent many hours at work and on her own time accumulating resource and referral information for indigent services as well as contacts and resources for everything from paying power bills to rent for patients so they will go home to find their power on and no eviction notice on their front door. The service is clearly above and beyond her duties as a Social Worker. "
