" Dorothy, the poor waitress as she always called herself shamelessly at the presence of friend and acquaintance, quickly threw the tea towel she was holding, untied the dirty tartan apron she almost always wore, and fixed her twinkling eyes on the chunk of a broken mirror that was precariously put on an old chest. "Your life is going to change!" she said to herself with a trembling voice. Dorothy gazed with disgust at the rotten ceiling and the dark, foul sitting room with the old and ugly furniture. The red carpet that turned brown after more than ten years of use, the faded curtains that were full of punctures and helpless patches, and the cracked walls all looked worse than they really were since Dorothy, for the first time, knew well how poor and miserable she was. She smiled in mischief and said: "Oh! What a sore shame! What the deuce am I? A working class nobody! A poor girl! A pauperised girl!" she rushed to the kitchen and clumsily tore through the debt jottings on the fridge like a fire storm and shouted: "I am rich! Dorothy swiftly is a millionaire!" she took a final, despising glance..."
