Description:

This paper discusses two historically based novels, "Ramza," written by Out El Kouloub and "The Sheltered Quarter," written by Hamza Bogary. The paper discusses the plots of each of the stories and some of the historical background to understanding the texts. The paper also discusses the importance of historical texts that tell the story from a firsthand experience compared to those written from learned knowledge.

From the Paper:

"Historical texts that tell the story from a firsthand experience provide a reader with much more critical information for understanding the culture and way of life being discussed. Class discussions and standard texts often provide the reader with general knowledge that has been passed down and researched through other sources. All forms help a student to understand and add to their present knowledge of the Middle East; it is just in different ways. Firsthand experiences and testimonials, like that provided by The Sheltered Quarter, gives an inside look from a Saudi person's perspective who lived the life. Ramza is another culture and area altogether, telling a tale set in Egypt, but rather than being a firsthand experience, it is based on information that has been learned."
