Description:

This paper consists of two sections; the first one discusses how Descartes saw the mind-body-spirit interrelationship and goes on the describe the similarities and differences between his theories and those of Freud. In the second part of the paper, the writer compares and contrasts the approaches of Catell's and Binet's conception of mental tests and abilities and provides examples.

From the Paper:

''In many ways, this is a point of separation between the two that would alter the perspective on treatment of mental illness, emotional distress and other conditions that might today be seen as relating to processes strictly bound to the mind. Accordingly, Descartes would espouse the view that the brain and the mind are to be viewed as two separate entities, with the former composing one's intellect and the latter comprising something more equivalent to a soul. Among the central developments offered to the discourse both on philosophy and biology would be Descartes' introduction of a direct and bi-directional correlation between the body and the mind.
''In other words, he made the argument that in addition to the understanding that the mind controls the body, the mind is also subject to bodily experiences. This reciprocity would be a central premise in the mind-body-spirit dynamic for Descartes, who identified the body as a set of response mechanisms which work in concert with the environment to motivate different bodily actions, where he viewed the might as being unrestrained by the physical laws of the universe.''
