This paper examines "The Aeneid" by Virgil and its deep fascination with time. It shows how "The Aeneid" is packed with echoes of past works of literature, "The Iliad" being perhaps the most commonly referred to work. The paper discusses three instances where the past is echoed in "The Aeneid" and discusses how the concept of the importance of time is seen in the similarity in the endings of the two epics.

From the Paper:

"This sense that the past is the engine pushing along the events in the epic is strengthened by the similarity in ending for both epics; neither completes the full storyline, each cutting itself short at the death/funeral of the native hero, reinforcing the tie to the past. The reason for this cut-off is that the ending is already known. In the Iliad, it's given that Achilles will be killed also, and that Troy will eventually fall. While the ending is not as easy to surmise in the Iliad, it can be inferred based on the idea that the past repeats itself, thus determining the future. Just as the Greeks defeated the Trojans, similarly, the Trojans will defeat the Rutulians. The course of Roman history will be as foretold by Anchises. However, despite the seeming implications that Rome will last forever, it can be deduced that since Greece will fall to the descendants of the Trojans, similarly, Rome too will eventually be defeated as the past repeats itself."
