From the Paper:"General Statements
This essay compares and contrasts two poems by T. S. Eliot: "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" (1915) and "Journey of the Magi" (1927).
In many ways, the theme of both poems is similar due to the fact that both works are concerned with a kind of death in life and the spiritual decay of western society. This was a highly significant theme for Eliot, and it appears in many of his poems including The Waste Land and Four Quartets. There is a loss of cultural worth in this theme, with an accompanying disintegration of spiritual values. All of this reflects a neurotic sickness in society, and a feeling of meaninglessness to life in a very existential sense. The moral and ethical tone of western society is shown as having reached a depth almost beyond redemption."
