This comparison and contrast essay focuses upon the issue of the placebo effect and, more generally, the question of biases and addressing them in the experimental method in three different research papers. Two of these papers consisting of original experimental research are compared, and then these are contrasted to a third study which takes the form of a literature review of work done upon the placebo effect in neurological studies. As is seen, the question of bias is a complex issue that even in double-blind studies sometimes cannot be totally eliminated from consideration in our assessment of medical research.
From the Paper:"One of the most compelling issues in the fields of medical research and treatment is that of the placebo effect. There exists a general consensus among researchers and scientists that the application of medical treatment invariably yields two responses from a patient: that related to the treatment, and that related to perception or expectations regarding the treatment being administered which is commonly termed the "placebo effect"."
