This paper compares the George Orwell story "Shooting an Elephant" and Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" piece. "In the George Orwell piece 'Shooting an Elephant' the narrator is a colonial police officer working in British Burma. He asserts that he has taken to bitterly hating his job and his oppressive employers. In the work by Joseph Conrad, 'Heart of Darkness', the narrator recounts the imperial mistreatment of the native peoples in Africa while searching for another European. Both stories tell the accounts of what witnesses believe are injustices committed in the name of colonization or making civil.
