Description:

This paper offers an in-depth analysis of the philosophies of Niccolo Machiavelli and Reinhold Niebuhr, comparing and contrasting them to one another. The paper begins by presenting a background of Niebuhr, including his biography and outlook. It continues by giving similar information about Machiavelli. In particular, the paper notes how both thinkers espoused abstaining from violence and pursuing peace. The paper concludes by citing both Neibuhr and Machiavelli as political analysts and patriots of their fellow man.

From the Paper:

"When Machiavelli lost his political stature, he aimed to get into the Medici's
good graces by writing an essay on the goals of the Medici, and dedicated it to
them. This, of course, was The Prince, but the problem was, the Medici disagreed
with the nature of the book and he was lost his "job" in politics. It outraged not
only the family, but the general public, because of the cruelty and evil nature
portrayed in The Prince. The legacy of The Prince defines Niccolo Machiavelli to
the present day. Several years after the Medici lost power and were thrown out of
Florence, the republic was re-established, Machiavelli wished to become reinstated
in the office he was ousted out of so long ago. "
