HAITI AND FRENCH SENEGAL Edwige Danticat writes about the massacre in Haiti in 1937 and the total destruction of what had been a centuries-old family structure. Ousmane Semberne writes about similar struggles in the late 1940s in French Senegal. In both novels what permeates every page is fear. In 1930s Haiti, the fear was of Trujillo and his army who swooped down on peace-loving Haitian natives to massacre them by the thousands. The reason? It is never clear.
