"Fantasy sustains people in times when reality fails them. Both Leopold Bloom in The Lotus Eaters chapter of Ulysses and Celie in the novel The Color Purple rely on fantasy to sustain them during times in their lives when reality has either failed them or is hard to accept. In The Color Purple Celie fantasizes about living with Nettie, about going to school, about being with Shug, about being anywhere else but in Mr.____'s house. In The Lotus Eaters Leopold fantasizes about having his son back, about strange women on the street, about masturbation, about Martha Clifford.
