Description:

This paper examines two books, "Wuthering Heights," written by Emily Bronte and "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde," written by Robert Stevenson. The paper specifically aims to understand why these two books are so similar through a careful examination of the primary relationships within the books. It examines the characters of Catherine Crenshaw in "Wuthering Heights" and Henry Jekyll in "The Strange Case of Mr. Jekyll and Dr. Hyde."

From the Paper:

"To understand why these two books are so similar necessitates a careful examination of the primary relationships within the book. In Stevenson's book the central character Dr. Jekyll is the only individual who is three dimensionally developed through both dialogue and background. Therefore he takes on the brunt of Stevenson's scrutiny and his transformation makes it evident that Stevenson's intent is to show the duality that exists in a conflicted individual. However in Bronte's Wuthering Heights the principle duality is placed not in one individual but two and instead of an individual it is manifest within two relationships. The first relationship which represents the "Jekyll" aspect of Catherine is her relationship with Edgar Linton, which has both the prestige associated with his name and the wealth of Thrashcross Manor."
